How to add an MCP server to Claude
Claude, Cowork and Claude Desktop (custom connectors)
- Go to Customize > Connectors.
- Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Enter a name and the remote MCP server URL, then continue.
- Review the detected authentication settings.
- Click Add.
- In a chat, use + then Connectors to turn the connector on or off.
- Team and Enterprise: an admin adds it under Organization settings > Connectors (Add > Custom > Web); members then click Connect to authenticate.
Free users are limited to one custom connector. On Team only Owners and Primary Owners can add custom connectors; on Enterprise Owners, Primary Owners and custom roles with Manage access to Libraries can. The support article lists Claude, Cowork and Claude Desktop for adding custom connectors and does not describe adding them from the mobile apps (web connectors from the directory are available on Claude Mobile).

Claude Desktop (local extensions)
- Go to Settings > Extensions.
- Click Browse extensions and Install on an Anthropic-reviewed extension, or open Advanced settings > Extension Developer.
- For a custom extension, click Install Extension and select the .mcpb file.
- Follow the prompts and enter any required settings.
The cited page documents desktop extensions (.mcpb). It does not document a claude_desktop_config.json setup, so that method is unverified here.

Claude Code
- Run claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> for a remote server.
- For a local process, run claude mcp add [options] <name> -- <command> [args...].
- Choose where to store it with --scope local, project or user.
- Approve project-scoped servers from .mcp.json when prompted.
claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcpThe SSE transport is deprecated in favor of HTTP.

Claude API (MCP connector)
- Send the anthropic-beta header mcp-client-2025-11-20 with your Messages API request.
- List the server in mcp_servers with type url and its https URL.
- Add an mcp_toolset entry in tools that references the server by name.
-H "anthropic-beta: mcp-client-2025-11-20"Beta. Only tool calls from the MCP specification are supported. The server must be publicly exposed through HTTP (Streamable HTTP or SSE); local STDIO servers cannot be connected directly. The docs.claude.com URL redirected to platform.claude.com, which served the content.

Before you connect
- Connectors aren't verified by Anthropic. Only connect Claude to servers built and hosted by organizations and applications you trust.
- On Team and Enterprise, a shared API key or fixed credential means everyone who uses the connector reaches the service with that same credential.
- During Research, Claude can invoke tools from your connectors automatically without further approval, so disable write-capable tools first.
- Connections come from Anthropic's cloud, so servers on private networks need Anthropic's IP ranges allowlisted.
- Servers that fetch external content can expose you to prompt injection risk (Claude Code).
- The Claude API MCP connector is in beta and is not eligible for zero data retention.
Brands with an official Claude connector
Each one is checked against the vendor’s own docs. Open a verdict for setup and a safety check.
Figma publishes an official MCP server. The remote server at mcp.figma.com/mcp works with Claude, Cursor and VS Code using Figma sign-in, and a desktop variant runs locally. It reads designs and generates code, and the remote server can also write to Figma files. Free-plan and View seat usage is capped at six calls per month.
Blender Lab, the Blender project's experimental division, publishes an official MCP server and add-on for Blender 5.1 or newer. It runs locally: the add-on inside Blender talks to a separate server process. It can execute LLM-written Python in your scene, and Blender warns it has no safeguards, so use a VM or non-sensitive machine.
Slack publishes an official remote MCP server at mcp.slack.com/mcp, and Anthropic lists it as a verified Claude connector made by Slack. It uses OAuth with per-tool user scopes, and workspace admins must approve the client. It can send messages and edit canvases, so review permissions before enabling.
Atlassian publishes an official remote MCP server, the Atlassian Rovo MCP server, for Jira, Confluence and other Atlassian apps at mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp. It uses OAuth 2.1 and is listed in Anthropic's connector directory. Jira delete and project-admin tools are off by default, and tool calls use Rovo credits.
Datadog publishes an official remote MCP server, hosted by Datadog and documented on docs.datadoghq.com. It connects to Claude, Cursor and VS Code, signs in with OAuth, and covers logs, metrics, traces, monitors and incidents. Write tools exist but require a separate org-level MCP Write Access setting.
Linear hosts an official remote MCP server at mcp.linear.app/mcp, documented on linear.app and listed in Anthropic's connector directory as Anthropic verified. It signs in with OAuth 2.1 or a bearer token. Read-write by default, with a separate /mcp/readonly endpoint for read-only use.
Notion runs an official hosted MCP server at mcp.notion.com/mcp, and Anthropic lists it as a verified Claude connector made by Notion. It uses OAuth and works on every Notion plan, with some features limited to Business or Enterprise. It can create, edit and delete pages. The older open-source npm server is no longer maintained.
Context7 has an official MCP server published by Upstash (upstash/context7), available remotely at mcp.context7.com/mcp or locally via npx. It fetches current library documentation for coding agents. A free API key is recommended for rate limits. Caveat: the docs it returns are community-contributed, not vetted by Upstash.
Supabase publishes an official MCP server, hosted at mcp.supabase.com/mcp and open source at supabase/mcp, and it is listed in Anthropic's connector directory. It signs in with browser OAuth. The server can run SQL and migrations, so Supabase advises read-only mode and project scoping.
Zapier runs its own hosted MCP server, documented on docs.zapier.com and listed in Anthropic's connector directory as Anthropic verified. It signs in with OAuth and works through Streamable HTTP. It also acts as a bridge: each tool is an action in one of 9,000+ connected apps, and each call uses two tasks.
AWS publishes an official, managed remote MCP server at aws-mcp.us-east-1.api.aws/mcp, documented on docs.aws.amazon.com and listed in Anthropic's directory as Anthropic verified. Docs search needs no sign-in; AWS API calls use OAuth or SigV4 with your IAM permissions. Read-only mode requires the SigV4 proxy.
Cloudflare publishes an official remote MCP server for its whole API at mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp, documented on developers.cloudflare.com and in github.com/cloudflare/mcp. It signs in with OAuth or an API token. Anthropic's directory lists a different Cloudflare server (Workers bindings) that the repo marks deprecated.
Excalidraw publishes an official MCP App server, hosted at mcp.excalidraw.com and in the excalidraw GitHub organization. It draws hand-drawn diagrams inline in Claude, ChatGPT, VS Code and other clients that support MCP Apps. No sign-in is required; one tool uploads diagrams to excalidraw.com for sharing.

Firecrawl has an official MCP server published by Firecrawl at firecrawl/firecrawl-mcp-server, with a hosted remote endpoint (mcp.firecrawl.dev) and a local npx option. It supports OAuth or an API key, and a limited keyless tier. Caveat: its docs instruct agents to send search feedback to Firecrawl by default.
Gmail has an official Claude connector: Anthropic's directory lists it as made by Google, pointing at Google's remote Gmail MCP endpoint (gmailmcp.googleapis.com). Google labels that server a Developer Preview and documents search, read, draft and label tools. Claude's own docs describe the connector as read-only; the directory shows more tools, so verify.
Google Drive has an official Claude connector: Anthropic's directory lists it as made by Google, pointing at Google's remote Drive MCP endpoint (drivemcp.googleapis.com). Google labels that server a Developer Preview and signs in with OAuth. Claude's directory lists share and trash tools that Google's own reference does not, so verify.
Claude's Microsoft 365 connector is built by Anthropic, not Microsoft: it reaches SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams at microsoft365.mcp.claude.com using delegated Entra sign-in, and an Entra admin must grant consent. Microsoft separately publishes its own Work IQ MCP server for Microsoft 365 data, documented on Microsoft Learn.
Mobbin publishes an official remote MCP server at api.mobbin.com/mcp, documented at docs.mobbin.com and in a github.com/mobbin repository. It signs in with OAuth and offers three search tools for screens, flows and sections. It is listed in Anthropic's connector directory as Anthropic verified.

It uses OAuth, works on all plans, and only allows clients Vercel has approved. It exposes a large catalog including deploys and purchases, with no read-only mode documented.
Databricks publishes an official managed MCP server, Genie One, reached through your workspace's Unity Gateway and documented on docs.databricks.com. It signs in with OAuth and enforces Unity Catalog permissions. The older Beta Genie endpoint is deprecated and sunsets October 31, 2026. Anthropic's directory lists a Databricks Genie connector.

It is listed in Anthropic's connector directory as Anthropic verified. It runs keyless with rate limits, or with OAuth or an API key. Its tools search and fetch the web.

The store connector can edit store data within the access level you approve.

Google Calendar has an official Claude connector: Anthropic's directory lists it as made by Google, pointing at Google's remote Calendar MCP endpoint (calendarmcp.googleapis.com), a Developer Preview. Claude's docs say the connector is read-only, yet both Google's reference and the directory list create, update and delete event tools; the sources conflict, so test before relying on it.

FAQ
- Can Claude use MCP servers?
- Yes. Claude supports custom connectors using remote MCP on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and Claude Code can add local or remote servers with claude mcp add.
- How do I add an MCP server to Claude Code?
- Run claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> for a remote server, or claude mcp add [options] <name> -- <command> [args...] for a local one. Use --scope to store it as local, project or user.

- No. Anthropic describes a Claude Code plugin as a directory of skills, agents, hooks, MCP servers or other components installed as one unit, from a marketplace via /plugin. Connectors are separate and connect Claude to outside tools.
- What is the Claude Connectors Directory?
- It is Anthropic's directory of connectors, at claude.ai/connectors. Open it from a chat via + > Connectors > Manage connectors, or from Customize > Connectors.
- How do Team and Enterprise admins enable custom connectors?
- An admin adds the connector under Organization settings > Connectors using Add > Custom > Web, then members click Connect to authenticate. On Team only Owners and Primary Owners can add them.
