ChatGPT MCP servers & plugins (apps, custom MCP servers)

Can ChatGPT use MCP servers, and how do you add one?

As of October 2026, ChatGPT can connect to custom remote MCP servers: OpenAI's docs describe adding one from the ChatGPT Plugins page, where it is created as a plugin. Codex (CLI and IDE) configures MCP through config.toml, and the OpenAI API supports a remote MCP tool. Plan eligibility for the ChatGPT web flow was not verified.

How to add an MCP server to ChatGPT

ChatGPT (web): custom MCP server as a plugin

  1. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins and select the plus button.
  2. Choose "Add custom MCP server".
  3. Enter a name and description, then paste an HTTPS URL ending in /mcp, or select a Secure MCP Tunnel.
  4. Configure authentication.
  5. Review the risk warning and select "I understand and want to continue".
  6. Select "Create as a plugin", then review the tools ChatGPT found.
  7. Install the plugin, open a new chat and pick it from the @ menu.

OpenAI's fetched docs do not state which plans can add custom MCP servers, and do not mention a "developer mode" toggle or beta label on these pages. Apps (including those built with the Apps SDK) are packaged into plugins, which can include apps, skills, or both. Searches also surfaced OpenAI Help Center articles on developer mode, but they could not be fetched, so no plan or beta claim is made here.

Codex CLI and IDE extension

  1. Run codex mcp add <server-name> -- <stdio server-command>, or edit ~/.codex/config.toml (or .codex/config.toml in a trusted project).
  2. For a remote server, add a [mcp_servers.<name>] table with a url.
  3. In the IDE extension: gear menu, MCP servers, Add server, choose STDIO or Streamable HTTP, save, then Restart extension.
  4. Run codex mcp list to see configured servers; use codex mcp login <server-name> for OAuth servers.
[mcp_servers.figma]
url = "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "FIGMA_OAUTH_TOKEN"
http_headers = { "X-Figma-Region" = "us-east-1" }

The CLI, IDE extension and ChatGPT desktop app share the same MCP setup in config.toml. Streamable HTTP supports bearer token, OAuth, and ChatGPT session authentication.

OpenAI API (Responses API remote MCP tool)

  1. Add a tool of type "mcp" with a server_label and server_url to a Responses API request.
  2. The API lists the server's tools (mcp_list_tools); narrow them with allowed_tools.
  3. Handle approvals with require_approval; the default is to request approval before data is shared.

Works with remote servers using Streamable HTTP or HTTP/SSE. Pass an OAuth access token in the authorization field on every request. connector_id is deprecated for models released after September 1, 2026; use server_url or tunnel_id.

Before you connect

  • OpenAI warns: "A malicious server can exfiltrate sensitive data from anything that enters the model's context."
  • By default, the API requests approval before any data is shared with a remote MCP server; only skip approval for servers you trust.
  • Adding a custom MCP server in ChatGPT shows a risk warning you must accept, and account and workspace policies apply.
  • In Business and Enterprise workspaces, "Upload plugins" and "Create plugins with MCPs" are off by default and controlled by admins.
  • Plan eligibility, beta status of developer mode, and write-action confirmation rules for ChatGPT web could not be verified from fetchable OpenAI pages as of October 2026.

Yes. OpenAI's docs show adding a custom MCP server from the ChatGPT Plugins page, and the Codex and API products support MCP too. Which plans can do this in ChatGPT web was not verified.
How do I add MCP to ChatGPT?
Go to chatgpt.com/plugins, select the plus button, choose "Add custom MCP server", paste an HTTPS URL ending in /mcp, accept the risk warning, then select "Create as a plugin".
How do I configure MCP in Codex?
Run codex mcp add <server-name> -- <command> or edit ~/.codex/config.toml with [mcp_servers.<name>] tables. The CLI, IDE extension and ChatGPT desktop app share this setup.
What are ChatGPT plugins now?
OpenAI's docs describe a plugin as a package that can include apps, skills, or both, and apps connect ChatGPT to other services. The fetched pages do not say that an earlier plugin system was retired.
Can the OpenAI API call remote MCP servers?
Yes. Add a tool with type "mcp" and a server_url to a Responses API request; the API lists and calls the server's tools and asks for approval by default.
