Does Power BI have an official MCP server or Claude connector?

As of October 2026, Microsoft publishes official Power BI MCP servers, documented on Microsoft Learn: a hosted authoring server (preview), a local authoring server (generally available, open source), and an earlier hosted query server (preview). All sign in with Microsoft Entra ID, and a Fabric admin must enable a tenant setting for hosted use. Claude directory listing not verified.

FAQ

Does Power BI have an official MCP server?

Yes. Microsoft documents a hosted and a local Power BI Authoring MCP server and an earlier hosted consumption endpoint on Microsoft Learn.

Which one should I use?

Authoring server to build or change semantic models; for answering business questions, Microsoft points to the Fabric IQ MCP endpoint.

Is Power BI a Claude connector?

Not verified in Anthropic's directory. Microsoft's docs show VS Code with GitHub Copilot; hosted servers need Entra OAuth, which some clients cannot use without a registered app.

What does my admin need to do?

A Fabric admin must enable the Power BI MCP tenant setting for hosted use; the local server also needs the XMLA endpoint set to Read Write.

Is it safe to let an agent edit my model?

It can delete and rename objects with your Write permission. Microsoft advises backups and using PBIP files under Git.
