Serena MCP server & Claude connector
Does Serena have an official MCP server or Claude connector?
Official
As of October 2026, Serena is itself an MCP server: a coding-agent toolkit published by the oraios organization, whose maintainers document it at oraios.github.io and in the oraios/serena repository. It runs locally over stdio or localhost HTTP with no sign-in. Its default tool set includes shell execution and file editing, and no general read-only mode is documented.

Setup
Claude Code
Install with uv, run serena init, then register the server (README says not to install via a marketplace).
claude mcp add --scope user serena -- serena start-mcp-server --context claude-code --project-from-cwdSourceClaude (claude.ai / Desktop)
Add a stdio entry to claude_desktop_config.json.

}SourceVS Code
Run MCP: Add Server, choose Command (stdio), and enter the command.
serena start-mcp-server --context=vscodeSourceCursor
Use the ide context; the page gives no Cursor-specific JSON.

Publisher verified
Project docs at oraios.github.io and README in the oraios/serena repo are the maintainers' own; the org's profile site is oraios-ai.de. The GitHub org is not marked verified. Serena is the project, so there is no separate vendor.

Auth model
No account or token. Stdio by default; optional streamable HTTP binds to localhost by default and the docs warn about exposing it.
- Flag
Write and delete access
Default-enabled tools include execute_shell_command, create_text_file, replace_content, replace_in_files, delete_memory. The security page says shell and edit tools are intended and recommends sandboxing. A read_only project setting exists but does not stop REPL code.
- Pass
Tool-description injection scan
Read the docs tool table. Two AI-addressed notes are usage guidance, not override attempts: delete_memory says to call only if instructed explicitly or permitted by the user; execute_shell_command says to read suggested-command memories first. Source tool descriptions not read.
- Pass
Repo maintenance
oraios/serena pushed 2026-10-15, not archived, 30366 stars, license field reported as 'other' (not a standard SPDX id).
FAQ
Is Serena an official MCP server?
Serena is itself an MCP server published by its maintainers, the oraios organization. There is no separate vendor product it stands in for.
Does it need an account or API key?
No. It runs locally; the LLM work is done by your own client.
Can it run shell commands and edit files?
Yes, by default. execute_shell_command and file-editing tools are enabled; the docs recommend a sandbox or restricted tool set.
Is there a read-only mode?
Not a general one. A read_only project setting blocks Serena's own editing tools, but the REPL can still change files.
Is it a Claude connector?
Not verified. It installs locally with uv; the README tells users not to install it via a marketplace.
