Home Assistant MCP server & Claude connector

Does Home Assistant have an official MCP server or Claude connector?

Official

As of October 2026, Home Assistant ships an official MCP Server integration in its core repository, documented on home-assistant.io and added in release 2025.2. It runs inside your own instance at /api/mcp, signs in with OAuth 2.0 PKCE, and is admin-only by default. It exposes the Assist tools for entities you have exposed; Claude directory listing not verified.

  • Read a live home state snapshot (homeassistant://assist/context-snapshot, when GetLiveContext is available)GetLiveContext
  • Use prompts exposed by the configured LLM API

Run

  • Run the Assist LLM API tools (control devices and read state for exposed entities)

From the publisher’s documentation for the version we checked. Not every tool is listed.

Safety check

  • Pass

    Publisher verified

Documented on home-assistant.io and implemented in the home-assistant/core repository (homeassistant/components/mcp_server). It is part of the product, not a separate server.

  • Pass

    Auth model

OAuth 2.0 with PKCE and client ID metadata documents; no client secret. By default only administrator accounts can use the endpoint.

  • Flag

    Write and delete access

Tools can control devices (anything exposed to Assist). 'Expose all LLM APIs' is on by default. No separate read-only mode is documented; narrow it by choosing LLM APIs and which entities are exposed.

  • Unknown

    Tool-description injection scan

Tools come from the user's configured LLM API, not a fixed list, so there is no static tool-description text to review. The docs page contains no text aimed at an AI.

FAQ

Does Home Assistant have an official MCP server?

Yes. The MCP Server integration is built into Home Assistant core (since 2025.2) and documented at home-assistant.io/integrations/mcp_server.

Is Home Assistant a Claude connector?

Not verified in Anthropic's directory. Claude can connect by adding your instance's MCP URL as a custom connector.

Is it remote or local?

It runs in your own Home Assistant at /api/mcp. Web-based Claude needs the instance reachable from the internet.

What can the AI control?

Only entities you expose to Assist, through the LLM APIs you allow. By default only admins can use the endpoint.

Is there a read-only mode?

No dedicated mode is documented. You limit access by choosing LLM APIs and which entities are exposed.
