Supabase vs PostgreSQL: MCP servers compared
Which one works better with Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants? Here is what each vendor publishes, side by side, from our dated verdicts.
The short answer
- Only Supabase publishes an official MCP server. PostgreSQL is "community only" as of Oct 2026.
- Supabase is listed as a Claude connector; the other is not.
- Supabase's server is hosted, so there is nothing to install. The other runs differently.
- Supabase documents more tools (8 vs 6 for PostgreSQL).
- Safety flags to review: Supabase 1, PostgreSQL 3. See each verdict for details.

| Detail | Supabase | PostgreSQL |
|---|---|---|
| Verdict | Official | Community only |
| Claude connector | Yes | Not confirmed |
| Server | Supabase MCP server (Supabase) | Postgres MCP Pro (crystaldba/postgres-mcp) (Crystal DBA) |
| How it runs | Hosted (remote URL) | Runs on your machine |
| Sign-in | OAuth sign-in | API key or token |
| Stage | Generally available | Unknown |
| Plan needed | Branching tools are experimental and need a paid plan; other plan requirements not stated. | Free, open source (MIT). Needs a Postgres connection string. |
| Documented tools | 8 (3 read, 5 write) | 6 (5 read, 1 write) |
| Can delete data | No documented delete tools | No documented delete tools |
| Safety flags | Default exposes write tools (execute_sql, apply_migration, deploy_edge_function, create_project). Read-only is available via ?read_only=true, plus project_ref scoping and features filtering. Docs warn destructive-SQL detection may not catch everything. | Community project owned by the crystaldba GitHub organization, not by the PostgreSQL project. · Database URI with username and password passed via DATABASE_URI environment variable; use a least-privilege role. · README config examples use --access-mode=unrestricted (full read/write, including schema changes). --access-mode=restricted limits to read-only transactions, but the README says it may not be safe for production and that unsafe stored-procedure languages can circumvent it. |

Supabase verdict
As of October 2026, Supabase publishes an official MCP server, hosted at mcp.supabase.com/mcp and open source at supabase/mcp, and it is listed in Anthropic's connector directory. It signs in with browser OAuth. The server can run SQL and migrations, so Supabase advises read-only mode and project scoping.
Setup, tools and safety check for Supabase →PostgreSQL verdict
As of October 2026, no official PostgreSQL MCP server was verified; the PostgreSQL project publishes none. The best-known server, the modelcontextprotocol reference implementation, is archived and had a documented read-only bypass. Maintained community options such as Postgres MCP Pro run locally with a connection string. Use a read-only database role regardless.
